Abstract: This thesis centers on the development, characterization, and application of a&#xD;
nanoemulsion containing Lippia origanoides essential oil (NE-OELO) within&#xD;
biodegradable active films composed of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). The objective&#xD;
is to create functional materials suitable for potential use in food packaging. The study is&#xD;
structured into two complementary phases, culminating in two scientific articles. Chapter&#xD;
1 explores the antimicrobial properties of both Lippia origanoides essential oil and its&#xD;
nanoemulsion, and analyzes their chemical composition and physicochemical&#xD;
characteristics. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized by&#xD;
gas chromatography, which revealed carvacrol as the major compound, accounting for&#xD;
41.56% of the composition. The nanoemulsion of the essential oil (NE-OELO) was&#xD;
obtained through ultrasound-assisted emulsification and was characterized in terms of&#xD;
droplet size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential. It demonstrated good&#xD;
physicochemical stability, with an average droplet size of 30.00 ± 1.70 nm, a PDI of 0.25&#xD;
± 0.03, and a zeta potential of −23.96 ± 3.61 mV. The antimicrobial activity of NE-OELO&#xD;
was assessed by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against foodrelated microorganisms. The evaluation indicated that NE-OELO exhibited significantly&#xD;
greater antimicrobial activity than the free essential oil, with lower MIC values against&#xD;
Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 00039), E. coli ETEC (ATCC 11105) and Salmonella&#xD;
typhimurium (ATCC 14028). In Chapter 2, the developed nanoemulsion was incorporated&#xD;
into biodegradable carboxymethylcellulose films using the casting method, at various&#xD;
concentrations of NE-OELO (10%, 15%, and 20%). The films were characterized for&#xD;
mechanical, optical, thermal, structural, and barrier properties, as well as antioxidant and&#xD;
antimicrobial activities. The inclusion of NE-OELO brought about significant structural&#xD;
and functional enhancements in the polymeric films. The films exhibited uniform&#xD;
thickness and a homogeneous surface, along with favorable optical properties, retaining&#xD;
high transparency and a low color variation index, qualities desirable for food packaging&#xD;
applications. Although an increase in opacity was observed, it did not detract from the&#xD;
films' overall visual appeal. With respect to functionality, the films containing NE-OELO&#xD;
demonstrated antioxidant activity, which increased with nanoemulsion concentration, a&#xD;
phenomenon linked to the presence of phenolic compounds. In vitro antimicrobial activity&#xD;
studies revealed that the volatile compounds released by the films were effective in&#xD;
inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, with inhibition zones directly correlated&#xD;
with NE-OELO concentration. These findings suggest that NE-OELO not only enhances&#xD;
antimicrobial activity but also facilitates its incorporation into biodegradable polymeric&#xD;
matrices. The integration of the nanoemulsion into CMC films yielded active materials&#xD;
with physicochemical and functional properties that meet the technological requirements&#xD;
for food packaging. This underscores the potential of these systems as a natural and&#xD;
sustainable alternative for enhancing food safety and preservation.

Abstract: Naringenin is a flavonoid present in citrus fruits and has several pharmacological activities&#xD;
proven as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, neuroprotective,&#xD;
among others. However, naringenin has low solubility that can be minimized with carriers&#xD;
such as cyclodextrins. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-depressant activity&#xD;
of flavonoid naringenin and naringenin-β-cyclodextrin (NR-βCD) inclusion complex at doses&#xD;
of 20 and 40 mg/kg p.o. in mice. The animals received acute treatment and were evaluated in&#xD;
forced swimming test (FST), tail suspension test (TST) and open field (OFT) tests.&#xD;
Pretreatment with haloperidol (0.2 mg/kg, i.p., D2 receptor antagonist), yohimbine (1 mg/kg,&#xD;
i.p., α2 adrenergic receptor antagonist) and ondansetron (1 mg/kg, i.p., 5-HT3) were used to&#xD;
investigate the involvement of the monoaminergic system. It was observed that NR and NRβCD (20 and 40 mg/kg, p.o), produced a significant reduction in the duration of immobility&#xD;
time in FST and TST. Pretreatment with haloperidol and yohimbine in NF demonstrated that&#xD;
the reduction in immobility time observed in NR treatment (20 mg/kg, p.o.) was reversed, but&#xD;
not by the ondansetron. The results demonstrated that the acute treatment with flavonoid and&#xD;
its complex have antidepressant effect in both tests without interference of the locomotor&#xD;
activity of the animals in the OFT, with possible mediation of the dopaminergic (D2 receptor)&#xD;
and noradrenergic (α2 adrenergic receptor) systems. Additionally, it is suggested that the NRβCD inclusion complex is a promising agent and has biotechnological value in the treatment of depression.

Abstract: Head and neck cancer is a malignant neoplasm, the occurrence of which is&#xD;
related to alcohol and tobacco consumption. Radiotherapy is one of the main&#xD;
approaches for its treatment; however, it can cause side effects on the oral mucosa,&#xD;
masticatory muscles, salivary glands, and teeth. The objective of this study was to&#xD;
evaluate the repair of apical periodontitis in endodontically treated teeth in individuals&#xD;
with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy, through a. This is an analytical&#xD;
matched case-control study, carried out based on the approval of the Research Ethics&#xD;
Committee on Human Beings through opinion 2.190.651 / CAAE:&#xD;
68689017.6.0000.0053; complying with the norms of Resolution 466/12. Patients&#xD;
irradiated in the head and neck region comprised the case group; and normally active&#xD;
adult patients comprised the control group, matched by sex and age. Periapical&#xD;
radiographs were performed using the bisecting angle technique, with the aid of a&#xD;
digital sensor and X-ray equipment, to verify the repair of the previously established&#xD;
pathology. The Mann-Whitney test and the chi-square test were used for statistical&#xD;
analysis, with 95% confidence intervals to measure the precision of the results. The&#xD;
epidemiological profile of patients with Head and Neck Cancer showed a&#xD;
predominance of females, with a median age of 50.0 years, most of whom reported&#xD;
being alcohol and/or tobacco users. The most affected anatomical regions were the&#xD;
pharynx and oral cavity. It was also observed that 80% of the patients in the case group&#xD;
had repair of the endodontic pathology, while only 20% persisted with no regression of&#xD;
the lesion; in the control group, 95% of the evaluated cases had repair. Therefore,&#xD;
there was no statistically significant difference (p=0.251) in the repair of apical&#xD;
periodontitis in patients with head and neck cancer when compared to normo-reactive&#xD;
patients from the adult population. It is concluded that apical periodontitis repair was&#xD;
observed, with bone healing possible even in the face of reduced cell numbers and low&#xD;
oxygen concentration. These cells, even in smaller quantities, were viable for&#xD;
attenuating the inflammatory process associated with residual periapical infection.

      <title>Multimodalidade e design no jornalismo em quadrinhos: aspectos representacionais e composicionais na construção dos sentidos</title>

Abstract: Historically, human beings have been both producers and interpreters of meaning. In the&#xD;
contemporary context, communication processes have increasingly involved the frequent&#xD;
interplay of multiple semiotic modes, giving rise to more complex practices of reading and&#xD;
meaning-making. This phenomenon constitutes multimodality, in which the cultural,&#xD;
multifaceted, and hybrid element plays a central role in language practices. Given this scenario, the general objective of this dissertation is to analyze the constitution and effect of meanings arising from multimodal design in Comic Journalism (CJ) texts. Thus, this study is theoretically grounded in Social Semiotics (Kress; van Leeuwen, 2001; 2006; Callow, 2013; Santos; Gualberto, 2023) and the Grammar of Visual Design (Kress; van Leeuwen, 2006). It also engages with studies of Discourse Genres, based on Bakhtin (2006), and Textual Genres, according to Marcuschi (2008), as well as with authors in the field of Social Communication who investigate Comic Book Journalism as a journalistic practice, such as Dutra (2003), Gomes (2009), and Weber and Rall (2017). The research corpus consists of texts from the graphic journalism genre, primarily comic-book reports and interviews published in Badaró magazine, which were selected based on thematic and compositional criteria. To this end, methodologically, a qualitative and descriptive-analytical approach is adopted, guided by a multimodal analysis of the texts, which includes a systematic description of representational choices (processes, participants, and contexts) and compositional choices (information value, framing, and salience). The results indicate that Comic Journalism mobilizes multimodal choices that enhance the construction of meaning and reader engagement, while simultaneously reconfiguring traditional practices of journalistic discourse. Furthermore, through this research, it was possible to categorize Comic Journalism as a hypergenre traversed by a journalisticcomic interdomain. Therefore, multimodal articulation in Comic Journalism expands the expressive possibilities of the hypergenre and requires the reader to employ multiliterate practices for the critical interpretation of the texts.
